    Free numbers and free calls

    This is the next instalment of a series of blog posts following the ongoing installation of a PBX (a Private Branch eXchange, literally a private telephone switchboard) in my house.

    I’ve pretty much got a working system now so I wanted to update you all, all that remains at this stage is connecting up to the existing landline to allow calls in/out over that. Given our needs I’ll try and keep that step as simple as possible.

    So this is continuing the series looking at Home Automation solutions, both in terms of the technology that’s available and what it can do for you.

    Continuing my theme of available options, I wanted to mention an option I didn’t mention last time, an option that I’ve discovered during my hunt for the home automation holy grail that I hadn’t heard of before. I started to see references to the Vera system quite often, so I’ve looked into it a little bit.

    Home PBX Update: Codecs and Security

    This is the next instalment of a series of blog posts following the ongoing installation of a PBX (a Private Branch eXchange, literally a private telephone switchboard) in my house.

    The thing about technology is that it’s great when it works, but it can be a pain to get it working. So far getting our home phone exchange (PBX) working has been just like that, but that’s exactly why I want to do it, so that I can go through all of the pain and use my experience to help other people. I doubt the savings we’ll make on phone calls will be so substantial, but the convenience of being able to transfer calls between handsets and pick up calls from VoIP and our land-line on the same devices will be extremely useful.
